OKR and OGSM are two widely used methods that help teams stay focused and achieve results together. Both give organizations clear direction and focus. They are concrete and clearly formulated. You can determine exactly whether a key result has been achieved. Both elements are crucial for actually achieving your ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-efaa170\" id=\"br-from-goals-to-concrete-action\" data-block-id=\"efaa170\"><h3 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><br>From goals to concrete action<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">Although OKRs formally consist only of objectives and key results, organizations in practice often add a third component: Initiatives. For example: achieve 30% revenue growth.<\/span><\/div><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-stackable-icon-list-item stk-block-icon-list-item stk-block stk-bba879a\" data-block-id=\"bba879a\"><div class=\"stk-block-icon-list-item__content\"><span class=\"stk--svg-wrapper\"><div class=\"stk--inner-svg\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\"><use xlink:href=\"#stk-icon-list__icon-svg-def-ff7a42b\"><\/use><\/svg><\/div><\/span><span class=\"stk-block-icon-list-item__text\">An input-OKR does not describe an end goal, but a means \u2013 the &#8216;how&#8217;. For example: open 10 new locations (which together lead to revenue growth).<\/span><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">Both variants have their value. Output-OKRs focus team members on the essence: why are we performing these activities? Input-OKRs, however, are more concrete and practically measurable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">Usually you see that OKRs higher in the organization are more output-oriented, while they become more input-oriented lower in the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">An article on <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240519082540\/https:\/\/www.whatmatters.com\/resources\/ogsm-vs-okr-whats-the-difference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whatmatters.com<\/a> (the website of OKR evangelist John Doerr) claims that this is a fundamental difference with OGSM. OGSM would mainly contain financial goals. Reality, however, shows something different. OGSM lends itself excellently to combining output and input in one integrated overview. The output is mainly expressed in the goals. The input is reflected in the indicators. Moreover, the goals are never exclusively financial. Customers, employees and sustainability, for example, regularly appear in the goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-dc85636\" id=\"hard-targets-and-ambitious-challenges\" data-block-id=\"dc85636\"><h3 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Hard targets and ambitious challenges<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">An interesting aspect of OKRs is the distinction between &#8220;committed&#8221; and &#8220;aspirational&#8221; OKRs. The first category must absolutely be realized. The owner fully commits to the success of this OKR and can be held accountable for it. The second category expresses the organization&#8217;s ambition and serves to challenge and motivate stakeholders. There is a chance we won&#8217;t reach the goal, but suppose we do succeed\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">You can also make this distinction in an OGSM.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-792e6dc white\" id=\"scroll-down\" data-block-id=\"792e6dc\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-792e6dc-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-aa2bb1a\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"aa2bb1a\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-aa2bb1a-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-aa2bb1a-inner-blocks\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-9e33b87\" id=\"learning-and-adjusting-per-quarter\" data-block-id=\"9e33b87\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Learning and adjusting per quarter<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">A widely applied rhythm for evaluating and adjusting OKRs are quarterly cycles. Each quarter you determine whether the objectives have been achieved and set the OKRs for the coming quarter. Teams can work on different OKRs in parallel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">During the quarter, for example monthly, you evaluate the progress of the OKR and determine whether the OKR will be continued or needs to be adjusted. This way you learn from your experiences and can respond to changing circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">OKRs are focused on contributing to the organizational strategy, but with a time horizon of (usually) a quarter. OKRs are therefore naturally more agile than OGSMs and fit in an environment with high dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">OGSMs are more plan-oriented than OKRs. An OGSM is a developed strategic plan with a time horizon that (usually) lies multiple years in the future. Through its systematic character, OGSM helps prioritize the various activities better. OGSM provides insight into the bigger picture and the connections between strategies. The long-term plan is translated into concrete short-term activities. That is: translate them to deeper organizational levels. This stimulates that OKRs deeper in the organization contribute to the bigger whole and that initiatives from different departments and teams are aligned with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"verbindingen-tussen-ok-rs-in-de-organisatie\" data-block-type=\"core\">OGSMs can be cascaded in a similar way, where the actions from the organization-OGSM become the strategies in the department-OGSMs. However, we prefer cascading based on strategies. The departments determine the formulation of their strategies themselves. In this they describe how they contribute to the organization-OGSM. It just depends on how you apply the method.
